The Wedding of River Song review

So here we are then. After 12 episodes and five months we arrive at Moffat's second series finale as head writer. And it's quite a departure for the show in terms of format. This is the first time a series finale has been a single, standalone episode. That's quite a worry.

The fact there's actually a wedding is the only aspect
of this episode which makes sense.
The biggest gripe we've had with the post-revival format of Doctor Who is that too many ideas have been crammed into 45 minutes. More often that not, the resulting episode is messy and rushed. Unless the basic premise is simple, like Blink or Midnight, it requires too much set-up and you're left with almost no time for the action and resolution.

However, Moffat has forced the series' story arc into so many episodes this year that we can almost dispense entirely with the set-up. A quick pre-credits 'previously' montage to refresh our memories and we're away. That should help the episode and frankly, Moffat needs it to.
